The adventurers rested themselves fully and prepared to leave the hideout, to escort Sildar to Phandalin. They carried the crates bearing the marks of the Lionshield Coster back to their wagon, still hidden near the Triboar Trail, and continued an uneventful journey into Phandalin.
Sildar left the party soon after entering Phandalin, casually forgetting to pay the party for their services, and the group set about exploring the town.
They stopped at Barthen’s Provisions to collect their reward for delivering Gundren’s wagon. After managing to haggle a slight bonus, and being encouraged into purchasing a set of signal whistles, they began to question Barthen about the events in the town. They learnt about the Redbrand nuisance and that Gundren’s two brothers, Nundro and Tharden, were recently in town and will probably return to the town soon to resupply.
The group took the chance to stop at the Shrine of Luck in the town’s square and met Sister Garele, an old acquaintance of Orfeas, and Adrick and Elron received a minor blessing of luck. Garele expressed her distaste for the Redbrands but admitted that her position in the Harpers was more concerned in gathering intel for her superiors than in fighting on the frontline herself. She mentioned that the party may be able to help her, but they left before she could elaborate.
Linene the owner of the Lionshield Coster was grateful for the return of her stolen goods. She was baffled by the party’s attempts to negotiate with her, before managing to sell a set of lovely purple robes to Orfeas and a partly-worn chain shirt to Elron.
As night fell the party headed to the local inn for rest. Immediately upon entry Elron lay down prone on the floor near the doorway, lying completely still. This drew the attention of the many patrons of the bar, whom were encouraged by the fine art form and turned back to their drinks with greater sense of contentedness. A comfortable room was arranged for the party and a round of ale and cider was ordered; as they drank they took the opportunity to mingle with the locals and listened to some rumours:
- Daran Edermath, the orchard keeper and maker of the local cider, is a former adventurer.
- Thel Dendrar, a local woodcarver, stood up to the Redbrands a tenday ago when they came by his shop and leered at his wife. The ruffians murdered him and took his body. Now his wife, daughter and son have gone missing too.
- The Redbrands hassle every business in town, except for the Phandalin Miner’s Exchange. They don’t want trouble with Halia Thornton, who runs it.
In the morning the party eagerly travelled to the Edermath Orchard to meet Daran, a member of the Order of the Gauntlet. He reiterated the problems that the town is having with the Redbrands and would like someone to deal with their leader, Glasstaff. He is aware that he Redbrand’s hideout is probably hidden underneath the Tresendar Manor. Daran has also heard stories from prospectors in the hills that someone is digging around in the ruins known as Old Owl Well. Many prospectors have been chased from the area by the undead and he would like the party to investigate.
The party wished to get back in touch with Sildar and hoped to track him down at the Townmaster’s hall. They saw a sign about some orc trouble near Wyvern Tor and headed inside. They met the current townmaster, Harbin Wester, and spoke to him at length about the Redbrands. He is clearly being bullied by the ruffians and was easily intimidated by the party too, though he refused to take any explicit action and wanted no part in any violence.
The party ran into Sildar, whom explained that he was yet to find Iarno Albrek, a short dark bearded wizard. He has discovered that Iarno disappeared two months ago while exploring the area around Tresendar Manor.
As they left the Townmaster’s Hall the adventurers were stopped by four armed ruffians, dressed in grimy red cloaks. Words were tossed about with neither party willing to give in their position; Adrick performed Thaumaturgy in an attempt to intimidate his opponents, sending a cowardly member of the group running down the street. The other three stood firm and combat ensued, leading to the death of two and the capture of the third.
The Redbrand spilled details of the secret entrance to the hideout, though warned it was guarded by “a hideous eye monster”. Harbin was unhappy about the violence in the town and was furious that the adventurers had made such a mess, but he was easily pressured into locking the third Redbrand away for the night.
After Tablen’s young son confirmed the existence of a secret entrance under the manor, the party slept to ease their wounds, intending to head directly to Tresendar Manor the next day.
